The Three Tank trail is at the east end of Speedway Blvd, and is the easier route up to Bridal Wreath Falls, mainly because it is a more gradual climb than the Douglas Springs trail (which I have previously posted on).
You start on the Douglas Springs trail, but very soon turn South on Garwood trail. After a bit you take a left fork which puts you on Wild Horse Trail, And then another left onto the Three Tank trail (although I like to stay on Wild Horse and then head up the Carillo trail before getting on to Three Tank). Here’s the route:
The trail as shown above is 8 miles, with an elevation gain of 1050 feet over the parking lot. With all the up’s and down’s, that’s a 1770 foot climb. Here’s the Google Earth video of the hike (GPX file available here):
Also note, the trail had been closed down three weeks ago because of Mountain Lion activity but there was a ranger at the trail head and I asked him about it. He said people rarely see them and when they do, the only thing they see is their tails as the run away from humans (I’ve never seen one myself). He thought that the lion that was seen may have recently killed and wanted to protect its food which it may take two to three days to eat. I did see two deer on the trail yesterday, so there is plenty of food for the mountain lions. Here is the warning that is posted on the trail:
UPDATE 2014-02-08: I went on the Three Tank trail hike again this weekend and took some more pictures. The above photos were taken as I descended down the trail, while the following photos are from early morning as I started out on the trail and then ascended past the large tank (second photo).
